History of Compassionate Action

Even before Sunray Meditation Society was recognized as a NGO at the United Nations (1992), Ven. Dhyani Ywahoo and the Sunray community were actively aligning their voices and global work with indigenous communities seeking to create sustainable futures for their people and to live in peace.

In 1980, Ven. Dhyani Ywahoo and others attended an international gathering to create beneficial awakening, change and to put aside divisiveness. A year later, Ven. Dhyani Ywahoo attended the International NGO Conference on Indigenous Populations and the Land in Geneva, Switzerland as one of the delegates from the American Indian Treaty Council.

In 1991, Ven. Dhyani Ywahoo and Rev. Margie Joy Walden travelled to Madrid, Spain to meet with Queen Sophia of Spain, arranged by Geraldine Lewis and Marysol Gonzalez, to discuss indigenous peoples’ perspectives on the upcoming Quinto Centenario. The discussions were very effective and important language was changed that acknowledged indigenous perspectives.
